Target Data Breach Resulted from Unsecure Third-Party Vendor’s Computer Systems

The target data breach, which resulted from a compromised third-party vendor, has spread to Walmart and Costco customers. The third-party contractor, an HVAC firm known as Fazio, handled Target’s air-conditioning and heating systems. When attackers compromised Fazio’s computer systems, they were able to find passwords and user IDs for systems at Target, Costco, and Walmart.

While most businesses have third-party vendors, many of these businesses fail to consider the security measures those third-party vendors have in place.
