For more than a century, the automobile has been designed around one basic assumption: someone needs to drive it.
Tesla’s Cybercab is built around the opposite idea.
There is no steering wheel, no accelerator pedal and no brake pedal. Instead, Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi is designed to pick up passengers, navigate to a destination and complete the trip without a human driver sitting behind the wheel.
That concept has officially moved beyond the demonstration stage. Tesla began offering limited public Cybercab rides in Austin, Texas, in September 2026, putting one of the company’s most ambitious autonomous-vehicle projects into real-world service.
So, what exactly is the Cybercab, how does it work and why is so much attention being paid to it?
What Is the Tesla Cybercab?
The Cybercab is a two-passenger electric vehicle designed specifically for Tesla’s Robotaxi service.
Unlike a Model 3 or Model Y, it was not designed around someone sitting in the driver’s seat.
Tesla’s current Cybercab rider documentation describes a vehicle with two seats, butterfly-style doors, a large central touchscreen and a rear cargo area. There is no steering wheel or traditional driver pedal assembly because Tesla intends the vehicle to operate autonomously.
Tesla says the vehicle uses cameras, vision systems and sensors to navigate city streets, highways, intersections and parking areas.
In other words, the Cybercab is not simply another Tesla with autonomous software added to it.
Autonomy is the reason the vehicle exists.
How Is Cybercab Different From Tesla’s Model Y Robotaxi?
Tesla’s Robotaxi service has also been operating with Model Y vehicles.
The difference is that the Model Y began life as a conventional passenger vehicle. It has a steering wheel, pedals, rear seats and the familiar controls expected in a privately owned automobile.
The Cybercab was designed specifically around autonomous ride-hailing.
Tesla’s Robotaxi website currently describes Cybercab as a vehicle intended for errands, commuting and similar trips, with seating for up to two passengers and a central touchscreen. Model Y Robotaxis, by comparison, can carry up to four passengers.
Tesla has said that it expects Cybercab eventually to replace much of the Model Y fleet and become the highest-volume vehicle in its Robotaxi operation.
What Is It Like Inside?
Perhaps the strangest thing about sitting inside a Cybercab is what is missing.
There is no driver’s position.
Both seats are available to passengers.
The vehicle’s large touchscreen becomes the primary interface for the trip. Riders can use it to view trip progress, adjust cabin temperature, control entertainment, contact support and interact with the vehicle.
The vehicle also includes USB-C charging ports and adjustable seating.
Tesla designed the seating at a height intended to make transfers easier for passengers with mobility needs and says the cabin can accommodate service animals. Braille is also incorporated into certain controls.
How Much Luggage Can It Carry?
Although Cybercab only carries two passengers, Tesla has given it a surprisingly useful cargo area.
The rear trunk provides about 20.2 cubic feet of storage. Tesla says it can accommodate examples such as two checked suitcases plus two carry-on bags, a folded stroller, golf travel bags or a small folded wheelchair.
There is no front trunk.
For a vehicle aimed largely at short-distance transportation, airport trips and urban travel, the emphasis appears to be on giving two passengers considerably more cargo room than might be expected from a small two-seat vehicle.
How Do You Take a Ride in a Cybercab?
The experience begins with Tesla’s Robotaxi app.
A rider requests a trip through the app and is assigned an available vehicle.
When the Cybercab arrives, it can recognize the phone belonging to the person who booked the ride. The door can then open automatically. Riders can also open the door manually or through the app.
Once inside, passengers buckle their seat belts and start the trip through the touchscreen.
During the ride, passengers can monitor their route and estimated arrival time. They can also change their destination through the Robotaxi app.
If something goes wrong, the touchscreen provides options to request support or ask the vehicle to pull over.
It is a very different concept from hailing a conventional taxi because there is no driver to tell where you are going, ask a question or help with the vehicle.
The software and touchscreen effectively become the driver interface.
Where Can You Ride in One?
As of September 2026, Cybercab availability remains limited.
Tesla launched public Cybercab rides in selected parts of Austin, Texas, in early September. More than 40 purpose-built Cybercabs were deployed as part of the initial service.
Tesla’s wider Robotaxi network is considerably broader and currently lists service in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, but much of that service uses Tesla Model Y vehicles rather than Cybercab.
So while Tesla’s Robotaxi service is expanding, seeing a Cybercab itself remains a relatively new experience.
Can You Buy a Tesla Cybercab?
For the moment, Tesla is presenting Cybercab primarily as part of its Robotaxi fleet, not as a conventional consumer vehicle that someone simply orders through the Tesla website.
Tesla does have an interest program that includes an option for organizations interested in Cybercab fleet vehicle purchasing, suggesting that broader fleet ownership is part of the company’s future plans.
But the current Cybercab experience is centered on requesting a ride rather than buying one for your driveway.
That distinction is important.
Cybercab may be less about selling another automobile and more about Tesla trying to sell transportation as a service.

Is It Really Completely Driverless?
That is the central question surrounding the entire project.
The Cybercab itself has no conventional driver controls, so Tesla is clearly designing around fully autonomous operation.
But autonomous vehicles remain one of the most closely watched areas of transportation technology.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in September that it was evaluating Tesla’s Cybercab rollout. The absence of traditional controls such as a steering wheel and pedals makes the vehicle significantly different from conventional cars operating under existing federal safety rules.
That does not mean the agency has concluded the vehicle is unsafe.
It means Cybercab is entering an area where technology is evolving faster than many of the rules originally written to govern automobiles.
That regulatory discussion is likely to become increasingly important if Tesla expands the fleet.
Why Does Cybercab Matter?
The significance of Cybercab extends well beyond Tesla.
For years, autonomous vehicles have been described as something that was almost ready.
