This decade will see significant advances in the way we diagnose and treat a number of illnesses thanks to artificial intelligence and other digital advances. AI will help with the diagnosis of cancer in the coming decade and may help in the search for a cancer cure. There’s even a phone app that lets you take a picture of a mole to analyze it. Additionally, Smartwatches may soon be able to predict heart attacks.

What Do Mole Mapping Apps Do?

The American Academy of Dermatology reports that skin cancer affects more Americans than any other cancer. About 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer each day. With cancer, early detection can mean the difference between effective treatment and an irreversible outcome.

“Google now has an AI-driven app that better at detecting breast cancer in x-rays than clinicians are. The number of false positives has gone down and doctors are very excited,” according to Luis Alvarez, President and CEO of Alvarez Technology Group in Salinas, CA.

There are many other apps that users can download to track and analyze suspicious-looking moles.

How Can Smart Watches Predict Heart Attacks?

Apple probably won’t be claiming that your Apple Watch can predict heart attacks anytime soon. There are simply too many legal ramifications. However, don’t be surprised if your doctor asks you to bring up the results of your app’s heart-monitoring features.

“Previous Apple Watches have always had a heart monitor, but [it can now] perform an electrocardiogram (also known as EKG or ECG), a test that measures the electrical activity of your heartbeat. What’s more, the new Apple Watch’s ECG feature is FDA-cleared to detect atrial fibrillation,” according to a recent article in Self.

The Apple Watch has a lot of tech surrounding healthcare. It detects your heartbeat every five seconds, and doctors can review the records to analyze recent trends.

“These devices are becoming more prevalent in our lives and can be used for more than just telling the time,” says Alvarez, whose own doctor asked to see the results stored in his Android watch.
